(Katie died of cancer. In her honor we established the “Katie Kanowsky Shooting Star Award”. This award will be given to one or two individuals who exemplify the sprit of Rotary Service above self, and are always lending a hand).

 

This year the Katie Kanowsky Shooting Star award was given to Wesley Singer and Sandy Lewis, the Award was presented by Karen Wilson (Katie’s sister).

 

The Birth of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge Sunset from The Rotary Club of Oak Ridge

 

On March 6, Bill Martin discussed his idea of a new Club with a few members of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge, including then-President Bob Craig.

 

At a Board meeting on March 11, the Board approved sponsoring the new Club

 

At a Club meeting on March 20, the Club voted to sponsor a new Club.

 

On April 17, we had an informational meeting for about 35 prospective Rotarians

 

On May 5, we formed 8 ad hoc committees to make recommendations on such things as bylaws, meeting arrangements, dues, and nominations for officers and directors.

 

May 16, the prospective members met and adopted the Constitution and Bylaws, and elected officers

 

Robin Textor, District Governor at that time, submitted all the paper work to RI on June 24.

 

The Rotary Club of Oak Ridge Sunset held its first regular meeting on June 30.

 

Rotary Year 2008-2009

 

At the District Conference April 18 2009 the club received 6 Awards:

 

·   Award for the largest increase in membership – 44%

·   Second place in Community Service for our “Baskets for Seniors” project.

·   Second place in Vocational Service for our “Science Fair” at Linden Elementary School.

·   STAR Club designation.  Our club gave $195 per member to the Rotary Foundation; this was sixth highest in the District.

·   GLOBE Club designation for our participation in an international project.

·   The District Governor’s Citation of Excellence
